Book Trails

Shepard and Lawrence published the original eight volume edition of the Book Trails series in 1928-9. It consists of a collection of short tales from around the world and through history which have been adapted for young readers by the editor, Renee B. Stern. Each volume was dedicated to a theme: For Baby Feet, Through the Wildwood, To Enchanted Places, On the Highroad to Adventure, To Turret Tops, At the Crossroads, Winding Westwards, and Of Trail Blazers.

The set must have been popular. Not long after the first edition hit the shelves, the other editions began to roll out, most notably for our purposes, one nearly identical to the Shepard and Lawrence edition issued by Child Development, Inc. In my (limited) research, I was able to learn little about Shepard and Lawrence. They were a Chicago company, and so was Child Development. I’m wondering if their was a buyout, takeover or name change, as S&L appears to have published just one other title beyond Book Trails. This and the fact that both editions published what looks like identical editions make me feel that is likely the case.

After 1928, the next edition was published by Child Development in 1946. It differs not only in appearance but in another significant aspect. The 1946 set split each volume of the previous edition into two parts (16 vols.). The content appears at a glance to be the same, otherwise, right down to the endpaper design. The binding of the new books is, however, a much sturdier library binding.

I like the fact that the new edition is really a reprint in new covers than a completely new edition with major changes in text and design. The covers aren’t as heartwarming (I’ve always loved paper pastedowns… except that they are easily damaged), but they are of a quality not often seen in the post-war period, and are quite attractive in their own way. All of the interior artwork is the same as the 1928 edition, though, preserving the charm and vintage feel of the earlier set. In an age of upheaval and recovery, there must have been a sense of comfort in that, especially for the adults reading to their children from these pages. Even now I find holding the book makes me think of gentler times. Sure that’s a romantic notion, I know. But it’s there…

Having written that, keep in mind that Book Trails is a product of its and other times. If you are looking for a politically correct collection of bedtime tales or reading for your younger children, then you might find places where the text or illustration strays from the straight and narrow of today’s thinking. One could always make an educational lesson of those instances, though. The stories are entertaining, cover a wide range of ethnicity, culture and history. I’d be willing to bet that most children would find them fascinating – and many of them new to their ears. And the multitude of illustrations are just a pleasure to look at. I wish my parents had found these when I was a child. Right up my alley!

We have only four of the 1946 books available, so I am selling them individually. All are in VG+ condition, with minor wear to the heads and tails of the spines (vol.4 also has some light soiling to the front board). The binding is so tight I’d bet that these copies have never been read, and the pristine, white pages attest to this. These are very nice copies.

Originally published in 1928 as an eight volume set, Book Trails was a series of tales from around the world for children. Each volume had its own theme: For Baby Feet, Through the Wildwoods, To Enchanted Lands, On the Highroad to Adventure, To Turret Tops, At the Crossroads, Winding Westward, and Of Trail Blazers.

The publisher Child Development Inc. reprinted the original series in 1946, splitting each of the eight volumes into two parts. We have just four of the sixteen available for sale, and are selling them separately for anyone wishing to complete their collection.All are in VG+ condition with just a little wear to the heads and tails of their spines. Vol. 4 (part 2 of Through the Wildwood) has some light soiling to the front cover. The library bindings are as new and the pages are crisp, clean and white in all of the volumes. They look and feel as if they have never been read.

The books make excellent readers for youngsters. The individual short stories would also make wonderful bedtime stories. Please keep in mind that these are a product of the period, and the content is not entirely “politically correct” by today’s standards. They do reflect many cultures and traditions, though, and could easily be used as educational building blocks.

The publisher and along with the editor, Renee B. Stern, seems to have done a wonderful job of preserving the 1920s feel of the newer series. Although the covers lack the rich colour pastedowns of the original edition, the new cover design is embossed in a style reminiscent of earlier generations of bookbinding traditions. Inside, the pages are profusely illustrated with woodcuts and colour illustrations that must have been lifted, in part at least, from the 1928 original.

These are books that make me wish I was a child again…
