Sweetpea (Leo Neilson)

Leo (Sweetpea) Neilson, an Ojibway from Peguis First Nation in Manitoba, began his painting career at the age of 16. His mentors include Gary Meeches and Isaac Bignell, and he also has found great inspiration in the works of Benjamin Chee Chee.

Although his prints are still widely available, his originals, mostly acrylic on paper and featuring geese with a family theme at their heart, are becoming more difficult to find. He has also painted drums and replica shields. You can also see signs along the Chief Peguis Trail in Winnipeg, Manitoba that feature his art – the only signs commissioned of a First Nations artist by the City of Winnipeg’s Transportation Department.
